Alvin J. Coffey Dies at Danville

Danville, Ky., Sept. 21 - Alvin J. Coffey, 64, veteran peace officer, farmer and former city treasurer of Danville, died in the Ephraim McDowell Memorial hospital here Saturday night after a long illness.

He was a native of Lincoln county, son of the late Marshall and Elizabeth Jones Coffey of Monticello, and was a member of the Christian church and of Boyle Post No. 46, American Legion.

Mr. Coffey was a member of the Danville police force for a total of 16 years, seven of which he served as chief of police. He also had served as a Boyle county deputy sheriff.

He was a veteran of World War I, during which he spent 23 months overseas with an engineer unit.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Betty Hayden Coffey; a brother, J. C. Coffey, Raton, N.M., and three sisters, Mrs. J. H. Newland of Stanford, Mrs. J. Y. Middleton of Cincinnati and Mrs. W. Carson Black of Lexington.

Funeral services will be held at the Stith funeral home here at 2 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Frank A. Rose, pastor of the First Christian church. Interment will be in Buffalo Springs cemetery, Stanford, where military rites will be conducted by the Boyle Legion post. Pallbearers will be George Guffey, Sheriff John McGinnis, G. L. Taylor, John Nichols, Wayne Lankford and T. B. Simmons.

They appeared in the census on 13 April 1940 in Danville, Boyle Co., KY.12528 Elizabeth "Bettie" Hayden, daughter of Andrew Jackson Hayden and Nancy Alexander Coffey, was born on 20 March 1881 in Wayne Co., KY. Elizabeth died in Danville, Boyle Co., KY on 24 August 1950 of a coronary thrombosis and was buried at Buffalo Springs Cemetery in Stanford, Lincoln Co., KY on 26 August 1950 .12525,12526,12527

Mrs. Betty Coffey

Danville, Ky., Aug. 24 - Mrs. Betty Hayden Coffey, 69, died at 8:40 a.m. today at her residence on College street. Mrs. Coffey had been in ill health since April.

She was born March 20, 1881, in Wayne County. She is survived by two sisters, Miss Minnie M. Hayden and Mrs. E. C. Davis, both of Danville.

Mrs. Coffey was a member of the First Christian church of Danville.

She was the widow of the late A. J. Coffey, former Danville police chief and former deputy sheriff of Boyle county. He died in 1947.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Stith Funeral home with burial to follow in Buffalo Springs cemetery at Stanford. Other funeral arrangements have not been completed.
