Jane G. Coffey and Benjamin Hawkins Fitzgerald203 were married. John Taylor, in e-mail dated Feb. 25, 2005 related the following: "I am now fairly certain that Jane and Benjamin Hawkins Fitzgerald were properly married in Albemarle County, where she was living at the time, and where the marriage records have been lost. We just don't have a copy of an official record; however, the courts treated them as married, as did her father." "On Oct. 9, 1841, Benjamin and Jane took her brother, Edmond Coffey, to court and had him removed as executor of estate for their sister Elizabeth, who had married James Bridge. Edmond Bridge, son of Elizabeth and James was appointed Executor. "While acting as Executor, Edmond had hired out slaves belonging to Elizabeth's estate. It was adjudged that Edmond owed the rental income to the estate. "The Bridge family sued Edmond F. and all legatees of Wm Coffey, the Elder. Some land was force sold and property distributed. There were two Nancy Coffeys listed. Speculation: Nancy Quinn, but not listed as such; and Nancy Hiner Fitzgerald. One Nancy could be one of Jane's illegitimate children before marriage to Benjamin. A Frankey Coffey, Jr. is also included. "Edmund F. filed suit against the Bridges, and another Elizabeth was named, but was daughter of William, Jr." Benjamin Hawkins Fitzgerald204 was born circa 1759 in Virginia. He served during the Revolutionary War in the 7th Virginia Regiment. He appeared in the census on 16 September 1850 in Nelson Co., VA.205 Benjamin was also known as Benjamin Hawkins.205 Jane G.
