"Blue Ridge Farmers Draw Guns on Lonely Hill Road.

"Charlottesville, Va., Feb. 26. - Shot at seven times, it is alleged, by Noel Coffey, a mountaineer residing near Nash, Nelson County, J. Leonard Oliver, aged 37, a farmer, has been brought to University Hospital with a bullet lodged about half an inch to the left of the body of the vertebrae.

"The shooting occurred in the heart of the Blue Ridge and was witnessed by Coffey's brother, Wallace, and his brother-in-law, Wayne McGrady, of Carroll County. Bad feeling is said to have existed between the two men for the past ten years.

"Earlier this week, it is alleged, Coffey paid a visit to Oliver's farm and tore up a section of fence. Meeting two nights later, sharp words were exchanged, the climax coming in the meeting on the lonely mountain road.

"Unless complications set in no effort will be made at present to probe for the bullet, which entered Oliver's back just to the left of the spinal column at the level of the fifth dorsal vertebrae. Oliver has a wife and three children.

"A brother, W. N. Oliver, now living in Thurmond, W. Va., had a narrow escape from violent death years ago when he was shot in the forehead. Coffey, who claims that he shot in self defense, surrendered to the authorities. He, too, is married, having a wife and one child."
