11518. Van Buren Coffey Jr. was born on 7 September 1925 in Georgia. Seaman 2d Class he served in the US Navy aboard the USS Inch (DE146) beginning on 20 March 1944.33087 The USS Inch, named for Rear Admiral Richard Inch who served during the Civil War and Spanish-American War, was commissioned on Sep. 8, 1943 and sent into the North Atlantic for escort operations. It saw action against German submarines and on Jun. 11, 1944 she, along with other destroyers in the group, caused German sub U-490 to surface and surrender. The group attacked and killed the German sub U-154 on Jul. 3, 1944. It was sent to the Pacific through the Panama Canal and trained for the invasion of Japan. The war ended before they were to sail. On Sep. 5, 1945 she sailed to Norfolk, VA and entered the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. Van died in Georgia on 14 August 1991 and was buried at Brunswick Memorial Park in Brunswick, Glynn Co., GA in August 1991 .33088 A living couple was married. Living was born in 1933. |
