He was born in North Carolina and lived in Kingsport since 1946. He was a graduate of Sullivan High School, class of '61. He worked at Blue Bell in Lenior and later at Kent Coffey Furniture. In 1967 he returned to work at Eastman until retiring in 1997 and continued to work as an LSE until December 2016. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48½ years, Shirley Mae Gragg Coffey; and fathers, Paul P. Cox and Earley Coffey. He is sur vived by his children, Julia Roop and husband Eddie of Richmond, Virginia, Dewayne Coffey and Cindy Coffey of Huntsville, Alabama, Keith Coffey of Kingsport, and Joel Cof fey and wife Annette of Jones-borough; two grandchildren, Dakota Francis and Seth Coffey; mother, Margie Cox of Kingsport; brothers, Russell Coffey of Kingsport, Jerry Cox of Mount Carmel, and Eddie Cox of Kingsport; several brothers and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. The family received friends 5-8 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2017, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service followed with Wayne Morelock and Clarence Bear officiating. Graveside ser vices will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Globe Baptist Church Cemetery in North Carolina with David Gragg officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jon Cox, Matthew Hartley, Dwight Ingram, Lowell Shaw, Elmer Fletcher (Moe), Tom Salyers, Richard Bourn, Marvin Bernard, Henry Lawson, and brothers-in-law. Shirley died at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Sullivan Co., TN on 18 June 2012 and was buried at Globe Baptist Church Cemetery in Lenoir, Caldwell Co., NC on 22 June 2012 .45666 Kingsport – Shirley Gragg Coffey, 67 of Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord, Monday afternoon, June 18, 2012 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, after a long illness. She was born in Lenoir, North Carolina and had been a resident of Kingsport most of her life. Mrs. Coffey was a member and secretary at Vernon Heights Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Julia Gragg. Survivors include her loving husband of 48 ½ years, Vester Kenneth "Cub" Coffey of the home; daughter, Julia Roop and husband Eddie of Richmond, VA; three sons, Dewayne Coffey & wife Cindy of Huntsville, AL, Keith Coffey of Kingsport and Joel "Tiny" Coffey & wife Annette of Jonesborough, TN; two grandsons, Dakota Francis and Seth Coffey; five sisters, Mary Johnson of Lenoir, NC, Martha Hartley of Edgemont, NC, Pat Murphy & husband Carl, Caroline Woody & husband Clyde and Vickie Ford & husband Larry, all of Collettsville, NC; five brothers, Troy "Bud" Gragg & wife Kay of Millers Creek, NC, Russell Gragg & Marie of Globe, NC, Randy Gragg & wife Ruth, Jerry Gragg & wife Ruth, and Richard Gragg & wife Phyllis all of Globe, NC; along with several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 21, 2012 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 7 pm in the Chapel with Pastor Michael Anglin officiating. Mrs. Coffey will be taken to the Evans Funeral Home 1070 Taylorsville Road, Lenoir, NC where graveside services will be held at 2 pm on Friday, June 22, 2012 at Globe Baptist Church Cemetery, Globe, NC with pastor Mike Anglin officiating. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family would like to extend a special Thank you to the Staff of Kingsport Oncology and the nurses and staff of the 3rd floor Wilcox Hall, for their special care.
