A justice of the peace ruled death by self-inflicted gunshot wounds, according to a report from Henderson. Coffey had been working in Houston, Tex. and formerly lived at Laneville near Henderson. Investigators said Coffey's two children had been left at a Henderson motel. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Clarence T. Coffey of Route 7, Lenoir; three daughters, Margaret Coffey and Mrs. Mildren Gibbons of Route 2, Granite Falls, Sandra Lee Coffey of Houston; one son, Clarence T. Coffey III of Houston; and two granddaughters. Coffey served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Clarence Tuttle Coffey Jr. and Rinda Arlea Greene were married in Yadkin Valley, Caldwell Co., NC.
