Wilford R. "Wick" Jackson was born on 21 December 1925 in Lincolnton Twp., Lincoln Co., NC. He lived with his maternal grandparents in Yadkin Valley, Caldwell Co., NC on 19 April 1930. Wilford enlisted in the US Air Corps on 6 January 1944 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.31287 Wilford died on 12 April 2008 at the age of 82 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Lenoir, Caldwell Co., NC and was buried at Bellview Cemetery in Lenoir, Caldwell Co., NC on 15 April 2008.

Wilford Jackson

Mr. Wilford R. “Wick” Jackson was born on December 21, 1925 in Lincolnton, to C.E. and Daisy Coffey Jackson, who preceded him in death. Mr. Jackson, 82, of Lenoir, died Saturday, April 12, 2008 in Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.

He graduated from Lenoir High School and Georgia Institute of Technology and the U.S. Naval Line Officers School in Monterey, Calif. He was privileged to be a pioneer in the space industry, working in the development of Atlas ICBM and Mercury and Gemini Space Programs. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force in World War II and of the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.

He was a life-time member of the Lenoir Optimist Club.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Kathryn Robbins Jackson; his son Stephen L. Jackson of Ranger, Texas; his son Phillip R. Jackson and wife Kathleen of Chatsworth, Calif.; granddaughter, Darci L. Gregorie of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; grandson, Andrew T. Jackson, of Lenoir and one great-granddaughter, Veronica Von Broecht of Calgary.

A Graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008 in Belleview Cemetery with the Rev. Gurney Robbins officiating.

The family will receive friends Monday, April 14, 2008 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Evans Funeral Service of Lenoir.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials being made to the Caldwell Heritage Museum, 112 Vaiden Street, Lenoir, NC 28645 or to the Lenoir Optimist Club, P.O. Box 713, Lenoir, NC 28645.
