Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Lewis D. (Lew) Evans of Salem; two children, Bette Evans Wood and her husband, Percy of Ruckersville and Robert L. (Bob) Evans and his wife, Peggy of Roanoke; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Edith was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Roanoke for many years. She was a career educator, having retired from the Roanoke City Schools in 1980. She was an active member of the Va. Theta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary sorority for women educators. A memorial service in celebration of Edith's life will be held on Monday, March 11, 2002, at 12 noon, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1831 Deyerle Road, SW, Roanoke, Va., following a private burial. Sep Evans and Mamie W. Dickerson, was born on 17 December 1916 in Appomattox Co., VA. Lewis enlisted in the US Army on 22 May 1942 at Richmond, Independent City, VA.47819 He served in the military 115th Inf. Regt., 29th Inf. Division between 1942 and 1945. Born on December 17, 1916, he was the son of the late D. Sep and Mamie D. Evans of Concord, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Edith Coffey Evans; a brother, T. DeWitt Evans; and a sister, Virginia E. Elder. He is survived by two children, Bette E. Wood and her husband Percy, of Gainesville, Va., and Robert L. Evans and his wife Peggy, of Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Frances Evans Tweedy, of Lynchburg, Va. Lew graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1939. A member of the 115th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division during World War II, he earned the rank of Captain while serving in the European Theater and was awarded a Bronze Star for heroic achievement in military operations in Normandy, France. He was a member of Roanoke Post 64 of the 29th Division Association. Lew, a self-taught engineer, retired from Appalachian Power Company in February 1982, following 35 years of service. He and Edith operated a small heating and air-conditioning design and consulting business, Evans Enterprises, Inc., for 14 years thereafter. He was a charter member and Life Fellow member of the Roanoke Chapter of ASHRAE, an international engineering society. For many years Lew was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, where he served as Elder, Clerk of the Session, and Sunday School teacher. A memorial service in celebration of Lew's life will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2005 at 12 noon at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1831 Deyerle Road., SW, Roanoke, Va., following a private burial. Visitation will follow in the church's fellowship hall.
