This is possibly the James Coffey for whom a marriage bond was prepared in Wilkes Co., NC on Aug. 30, 1794. The bride intended was a Sarah Coffey and bondsman was George Hays. This George is possibly the same that married Mary Juda "Polly" Mills. His bondsman was Benjamin Coffey. Some researchers believe James is a son of Joel and Martha Celia Stapp Coffey, descended from Chesley Joel and Jane Cleveland Coffey with Chesley being a son of Edward Joshua Coffey and Grave Cleveland. This is speculation and not based on any found source. Sarah Coffey is said to have been the daughter of Nebuzaradan and Elizabeth Hayes Coffey, antoer son of Chesley Joel. Again, speculative. Of course, James, Jr. parentage is also speculative in this genealogy.
