Rev. Gordon E. Scruggs, 97, formerly of 138 Linden Street, Arden, died Saturday, November 19, 2005.

Rev. Scruggs was born in Haywood County and was a son of the late Leroy and Mary Lou Scruggs. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lee Taylor Scruggs, who died in1980. Rev. Scruggs was a retired Baptist minister and served churches in Buncombe, Caldwell, Macon, Jackson and Haywood Counties and in Tennessee and Washington states. He was a member and pastor emeritus of Bethel Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel Barclay Scruggs; one daughter, Carolyn Marie Jenkins of Arden; one son, Lowell Scruggs of Asheville; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by brothers, Milford Scruggs of Waynesville, Glen Scruggs of Hazelwood, Rufus Scruggs of Bloomfield, OH and Roscoe Scruggs of Lenoir and a sister Mildred of Florida.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Newfound Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Phillips, Harold Savell and Mark Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. His family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is in charge of the arrangements.
