Fifth Generation

292. Cleveland L. Coffey was born circa 1817.

Cleveland L. Coffey and Sophronia Oatts were married. Sophronia Oatts was born on 4 July 1812 in Kentucky. She appeared in the census on 6 June 1860 in Monticello, Wayne Co., KY.1032 She appeared in the census on 10 August 1870 in Monticello, Wayne Co., KY.1033 [PersonLfirst] died on 3 January 1877 at the age of 64 in Wayne Co., KY and was buried at Elk Springs Valley Cemetery in Oil Valley, Wayne Co., KY.1034,1035

The Sophronia born to Joshua and Polly Coffey Oatts was 14-yrs old in the 1850 census, meaning she was born 1835-36. Given that, I suspect that the Sophronia who married Cleveland Coffey and Alexander Bobbitt was not the daughter of Joshua and Polly.

The 1850 Wayne Co. census enumerated Alexander R. Bobbitt, age 38, blacksmith, with wife Sophrona, age 38, and children Jervis T. Coffey, age 17, Mary C. Coffey, age 16, Margaret E. Bobitt, age 12, John Bobbitt, age 9, James W. Bobbitt, age 8, Sarah A. Bobbitt, age 6, Thomas O. Bobbitt, age 1 and Tyre Samson, age 20.

The widow Sophronia Bobbitt in the 1860 Monticello, Wayne Co., KY census but she is 46 yrs. old and was born c1814. With her are children James Bobbitt, age 15, Sallie Bobbitt, age 13, and Therissa Bobbitt, age 7. There are Hardin and Frisbie families adjacent to her.

Sophronia was enumerated as a slave owner in 1860. She had one male mulatto, age 12. Next door to her are Lewis Coffey, Jonathan Frisbie, John Frisbie and M.D. Hardin, also slave owners. Also nearby is Benjamin F. Coffey, a slave ownr with 18 slaves, mostly children.

This Sophronia is also found in the 1870 Wayne Co. census at age 56, again indicating birth c1814. The only child remaining with her at this census is Theresa, age 18. She has one domestic named Lucy Havens, a 20 yr. old black who also has a child named Lucy, age 1.

The Sophronia Bobbitt buried at Elk Springs in Monticello was born Jul. 4, 1812 and died Jan. 3, 1877. She is said to have been the wife of Cleveland Coffey, then the wife of Alexander Bobbitt (1812-1854).

Some genealogies that I've seen indicate that this Sophronia was a widow of an unnamed Coffey. At least one seems to believe that her maiden name was Samson.
