2253. John Lewis Coffey8435 was born on 21 September 1828 in Morgan Co., IN. John died in Moran, Allen Co., KS on 8 June 1910.

OBITUARY -- JOHN L. COFFEY

John L. Coffey was born in Morgan County, Indiana, September 2l, l828, departed this life at his home near Moran, Kansas, June 8, l9l0, aged 8l years, 8 months, and l8 days. He was married to Celia Jane Norman, December 27, l849. To this union were born thirteen children, eight of whom survive him. The wife and five children having preceded him to the Heavenly home. The remaining children live near here except one son in Martinsville, Indiana, one near Bebee, Arkansas, and one daughter near Liberal, Kansas.

They moved from their home in Indiana to Vernon Co., Missouri in l880, thence to Allen County, Kansas in l885, where they have since resided. Grandpa Coffey as he was familiarly called, was a soldier in the Mexican War, having enlisted at the age of nineteen. A private of Captain Daniel Lunderman's Co. G 4th Regt. Indiana Volunteers, who was enrolled June l5, l847, and honorably discharged from the services at Madison, Indiana July l6, l848. He was drafted in the services of the Civil War and started to fulfill his place in the great struggle but receiving word on the way that they would not be needed, he returned home.

Mr. Coffey has been a sufferer for many months and bore his affliction with great patience, never murmuring nor complaining yet he longed to be free from his miseries of life and death came as a sweet release. He believed in the teachings of the Bible and the immortality of the soul. He was of a quiet and unassuming nature, generous and willing to help those in need of his assistance, kind and patient with his family. This won him the love and respect of all who knew him. This is probably the John Coffey who enlisted in 1846 as a volunteer in The Mexican War. He was a resident of Martinsville.

He appeared in the census on 1 January 1905 in La Harpe, Allen Co., KS.8441 He registered for the WWI draft on 12 September 1918 in Allen Co., KS.8442 He appeared in the census on 16 January 1920 in Allen Co., KS.8443 Melbourne died in Allen Co., KS on 23 January 1960 and was buried at Moran Cemetery in Moran, Allen Co., KS in January 1960 .8444
