Slaughter was born in Kentucky, April 8, 1812, and in 1853 came to Texas. His father, Matthew Slaughter, was a native of Virginia and an early settler of Lincoln county, Kentucky; he took part in the early Indian wars, and was present at the death of Tecumseh, and also served in the War of 1812; he married Polly Huston, daughter of Stevenson Huston, of Virginia, the latter also a soldier in the Indian war. To this union were born eight children, James H. being the third. He was reared a farmer, received a common-school education, and married Miss. Minerva A. Coffee, daughter of Colonel Jesse Coffee, of Kentucky, the latter a gentleman of much prominence in the State and for several terms a member of its legislature. This marriage has also been blessed with eight children, born in the following order - Mary H., Jesse C., Betty, William P., Matthew, Osborn N., Mittie J., and Eliza. When Mr. Slaughter first came to Texas game was abundant, but he was compelled, nevertheless, to undergo all the hardships and inconveniences of pioneer life; but he soon became satisfied with his new home, acquired wealth with the advance of civilization, and is now enjoying in east the happiness that always results from a well-spent early life.
