He lived with Thomas Winkler in Hancock Co., TN on 23 November 1850. James died in Stone Co., MO on 15 March 1862.

Verner Dotson: Our grandfather was Benjamin Scaggs born in Christian County,Missouri, in 1851 and died in 1889. He was buried in the cemetery near the Wilson Creek battle grounds about 10 miles southeast of Springfield.

Page: Letter dated 3 Mar 1972, states " Grandpa Cloud was killed at the beginning of the Civil War by some men who hung his body up in a tree for Grandmother Cloud to see and then they took all of their hogs and cattle."

Ancestor Linda Turner, Nixa, MO cites the family story of James being shot in the back.

James M. Cloud was a member of Capt. Day's Co. C., Stone Co. Regt, Missouri Home Guard Infantry. The regiment was formed May, 1861, and mustered out in July, 1861.
