Coffey San Francisco Chronicle (CA) — Tuesday, May 17, 1988 A memorial service for Hubert Stanley Coffey, 77, professor emeritus of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, will be held in Berkeley on Saturday. Professor Coffey died on May 9 in Richmond after a long illness. A native of Wellman, Iowa, Professor Coffey received his doctorate in psychology from the University of Iowa. After serving as a Navy lieutenant commander in World War II, he joined the faculty at UC Berkeley in 1947. He taught clinical psychology and began the experiments in group psychology that led to today's "humanistic psychology." Professor Coffey suffered a stroke in the early 1970s, but continued to teach seminars at his home until the early 1980s. He was active in many psychology groups and professional organizations and was a longtime member of the American Civil Liberties Union and the Unitarian Church. Professor Coffey is survived by two sons, Francis of Calistoga and Nicholas of Pleasant Hill; a daughter, Anna Bass of Berkeley, two grandchildren and five brothers and sisters. The memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the First Unitarian Church of Berkeley, 1 Lawson Road, Kensington. ----- University of California: In Memoriam, 1988 Hubert Stanley Coffey, Psychology: Berkeley 1910-1988 Professor Emeritus Hugh's last years were darkened by ill health. In 1970 he had the first of a series of progressively more incapacitating strokes. For a time he was able to teach part-time, assisted by his wife, colleagues, and advanced students, but he was ultimately forced to retire altogether from his University duties.
