LYNDHURST- Gordon Harry Demastus, 70, of Route 1, Lyndhurst, died yesterday at his home.

He was born in Augusta County, Nov. 10, 1903, a son of the late Jessie and Sarah Elizabeth Demastus.

He was a member of the Mountain Top Christian Church at Love.

He retired as maintenance foreman of the Blue Ridge Parkway July 1970.

He began employment with the National Park Service in 1939. He was given the Department of Interior Commendable Service Award for his assistance in the restoration of the pioneer farm concept at Humpback Rocks and the development of roadside overlooks and vistas on the Parkway.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hattie Mary Coffey Demastus; one daughter, Mrs. Clinton D. (Susie) Bridge and two sons, Gordon Austin Demastus and William Coleman Demastus, all of Lyndhurst; one brother, Carless W. Demastus of Stuarts Draft; two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Evans of Waynesboro and Mrs. Bessie Nicholson of Upper Darby, Pa.; four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of the Etter Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Roy D. Kiser and the Rev. Charles C. Ramsey, with interment in Mountain Top Christian Church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jesse W. Bridge, Edgar Austin, Deli Fitzgerald, Elmer R. Fitzgerald, Mitchell Seaman and French R. Quick.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the maintenance crew of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Kenneth R. Ashley, Aubrey Bradley, Joe Harmon, Jerry Shirley.

LYNDHURST -- Hattie (Coffey) Demastus, 84, of. Rt. 1, Lyndhurst, died Saturday morning (March 23, 1991) at University of Virginia Medical Center. She was born June 26, 1906 in Nelson County, a daughter of Joseph and Tereasa Coffey. She was a member of Mountain Top Christian Church. Her husband, Gordon H. Demastus, died May 23, 1974.

Surviving are a daughter, Susie, Bridge, and two sons, Austin and William C. Demastus, all of Lyndhurst; a brother, Saylor Coffey of Love; five grandchildren; and five, great-grandchildren.

A service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Waynesboro chapel of Etter Funeral Home by the Revs. Ray Coffey, Stan Shirk and Charles Ramsey, with burial at Mountain Top Christian Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Jerry and Gary Demastus, Dave Yingling, Warren Hatter, Ed Fitzgerald, Melvin Glass, Jeff Brown and Neil Bridge.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the residences of her children.
