Steward, died at 84 Longtime Chattanooga resident Mary Helen Stewart Coffey, 84, died Saturday, according to her son, Shelby Coffey. Mrs. Coffey was the daughter of former U.S. Sen. Thomas A. Stewart, D-Tenn., and was the wife of the late Charles S. Coffey Jr., a prominent Chattanooga attorney. She attended Agnes Scott College and graduated from Kings Smith College in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Coffey was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and the Senate Daughters Club. She worked with a number of Chattanooga arts and historical groups Survivors include her son Shelby Coffey, former editor of the Los Angeles Times, former president of CNN Business News and currently Senior Fellow at the Freedom Forum, an Arlington, Va.-based foundation dedicated to freedom of the press; a daughter, Anne Coffey, a cinematographer; a sister, Elizabeth Dunn; two brothers, Fricks Stewart and Thomas Meville Stewart; and sister-in-law, Mrs. James Rawlings, of Lookout Mountain.
