DFC Presented to Portland Chief

A long-delayed presentation of the distinguished flying cross and a god star in lieu of a second cross was made recently to Darrell K. Coffey, aviation chief electronic technician's mate, of Portland, at the naval air station, Memphis, Tenn. Presentation was made to Coffey by Capt. W. S. Cunningham, commanding officer of naval aviation technical training center at Memphis, where Coffey is serving as an instructor.

The awards were for achievement in aerial action in the Pacific theater during World Wat II. Coffey, who enlisted in the navy in 1935 upon his graduation from high school at Toppenish, Wash., is a survivor of the sinking by the Japs of the aircraft carrier Lexington in the Coral sea on May 8, 1942.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Coffey, 1232 S. W. 6th avenue.
Darrell died on 31 March 1997 and was buried at Fort Smith National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., AR in April 1997 .41197

Darrell Kirkland Coffey and Alice Inez Rowden were married. Alice Inez Rowden was born on 5 October 1923 in Missouri. Alice died at Springdale Health and Rehabilitation in Springdale, Washington Co., AR on 16 August 2013 and was buried at Fort Smith National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., AR on 20 August 2013 .41198

Alice Inez Coffey
FAYETTEVILLE - Alice Inez Coffey, 89, of Fayetteville, Ark., passed away on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, in Springdale Health and Rehabilitation. She was a homemaker and a member of Rolling Hills Baptist Church of Fayetteville.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at Ocker-Putman Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Ocker-Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith, Ark.

She is survived by her daughter, Peg Coffey of Fayetteville, Ark.; one son, Ralph (Treva) Coffey of Waldron, Ark.; one sister, Peggy Daugherty of Ark.; four grandchildren, Tanya and Wilson Kennedy, Timmy and Brenda Coffey, Tammy and Bob Caldwell and Chris and Jason Stone; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will visit with friends from 10-11 a.m. prior to the funeral service.
