Fall From Tree Fatal

Lenoir, July 14 - James Newland Coffey, 57, of Route 7, Lenoir, died today in a Charlotte hospital. He was injured in a fall from a cherry tree at Silverstone on July 1. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Coffey was born in Watauga County and was employed by Hibriten Chair Co. Survivors: His wife, Mrs. Nealie Bertha Coffey; six daughter[s], Mrs. Dorothy Pope, Mrs. John Price, Mrs. Harvey West, Mrs. Jimmy Hodge, Mrs. James Hearold and Mrs. Roy Woodruff, all of Lenoir; six sons, James, Clint, Glen, Daniel, J. D., and Joe Coffey, all of Lenoir; one brother, Milt Coffey of Lenoir; three sisters, Mrs. Bertha McGarr and Mrs. Florence Church, of Lenoir and another in Washington; and 30 grandchildren.

Authorities said that Howard Byrd, also of Route 7, Lenoir, and Coffey were fishing from a boat in the river. They said Byrd decided to jump into the river for a swim, and Coffey followed him. Coffey was the son of Mrs. Newland Coffey.
