542. Enoch Coffey was born circa 1809 in Burke Co., NC. He appeared in the census on 20 July 1860 in Johns River Twp., Caldwell Co., NC.²²⁴⁶ He appeared in the census on 2 August 1870 in Johns River Twp., Caldwell Co., NC.²²⁴⁷ Enoch appeared in the census on 16 June 1880 in Johns River Twp., Caldwell Co., NC.²²⁴⁸ Enoch died in Yadkin Valley, Caldwell Co., NC on 3 October 1893. His burial site is unknown to me.²²⁴⁹

The Lenoir Topic says that last Wednesday evening Mr. Enoch Coffey, of Caldwell, who had been to a funeral on John's river, was returning home and in crossing the creek near his house on a foot log, stumbled and fell into the creek, his head striking a rock in the creek, which, is is thought, killed him instantly. He was not found until Thursday morning about 8 o'clock, and then at the foot log where he had fallen on his hands and knees, his body not having been washed down the creek, although it was raining and the creek was up. Mr. Coffey was about 86 years old.

In 1850 Enoch was 38 years old, and in 1860 he was 42. In 1870 his age was 61 and in 1880 he was 71.

Enoch Coffey and Martha Calloway were married. They appeared in the census on 1 August 1850 in Johns River Twp., Caldwell Co., NC.²²⁵³

We are not yet certain which of Enoch's wives had which children. It appears that he was married to Prudence for some years before her death, and they very likely had children, some of which are enumerated here under Martha. Martha Calloway was born circa 1818 in Burke Co., NC.
