Monday, September 8, I commenced work for the JOURNAL and Homestead in Franklin Township, one of the finest townships in the county. I enjoyed the good roads very much and wish to thank the good people for their many kindnesses to me while in their midst.

Tuesday morning I continued my work, driving north to Weldon. I called on W.A. MACHLAN, an old JOURNAL reader. He has lived in the county 44 years and owns a farm of 200 acres. He was married in l879 to ELLA MOORE. They have a family of ten children, all at home but one girl who is married, and one boy, PERRY, who is in the U.S. Regular Army. He belongs to the field artillery and is now at Washington. He has recently applied for a transfer to the artillery in the Philippines.
