Misc. Notes
Notes from Bryan & Sandra: “Enrica’s father was an Italian chef. She had many siblings. Was married at age 13 and had first son at age 14.”
Memo: New York Passenger Lists 1820-1957) show she entered New York on the ship “Dante Alighieri” sailing from Napoli on 7 Feb and arriving on 3 Mar 1920. She is age 8, and travelling with her mother Maria (age 34), sister Antonia (12), brother Orlando (11), and sister Maria (8). There is also a Rosa Carlini, age 16, married, traveling with them, who also appears to be a sister. They are all going to Barnsboro, PA, apparently to meet Maria’s husband.
Memo: Think female passengers travelling under maiden name, an Italian practice? If so, then mother Maria is “Maria D’Amico”?
Memo: The marriage date of 12 Jan 1926 may be suspect. The author of the ancestry.com site (whoever he/she is) where it was found admits: “Originally, the only date I had was ?? the 12th, 1926. With the first born being in November of 1926, I simply worked back 9 months (I don't think they were that eager that they had a child in less than 9 ) and January was the only month available in 1926.Originally, the only date I had was ?? the 12th, 1926. With the first born being in November of 1926, I simply worked back 9 months (I don't think they were that eager that they had a child in less than 9 ) and January was the only month available in 1926.”
The problem is that the 1930 census says she was married at age 14, which (if correct, and if her birth date is correct) would mean she was not married before September 1926.
PARENTAL CLUES:
Now, knowing that Enrica CARLINI immigrated in 1920, and that her mother’s name was Maria/Mary, and that she travelled to Barnesboro, PA, and married there, we can go back to the 1930 census for continuing clues, looking for a “Mary/Maria Carlini”. And BINGO!
1930 CENSUS, CAMBRIA CO., BARNESBORO:
Just down the street from the Lucchetti’s, at 605 Philadelphia Avenue, we find our Mary CARLINI. (Actually the census taker wrote “CAROLINA”, but since neither Mary nor her husband can read, that is an easy mistake. It’s obviously the right family.)
Head of the household is Mariano CARLINI (age 48) with his wife Mary (44) and son Tony (9). They rent their home for $15/mo, and they do have a radio. They were married in about 1905. Neither can read or write, they are from Italy. Mariano is Naturalized and can speak English, Mary is Alien and CANNOT speak english. Mariano works for the steam railroad.
Now, an interesting observation is that Mariano immigrated to the USA in 1905, and Mary came in 1920 (consistent with arrival of her daughter). Given the ages of the children arriving with Mary, it appears highly probable that Mariano spent 15 years in the USA, with trips back to Italy, until he was ready to support his family starting in 1920.
So can we work out the details of Marino’s 1905 arrival? Back to New York Passenger Lists 1820-1957): We find Mariano Carlini arriving at age 23 on the ship “Konig Albert”, which left Naples on 17 Feb 1905 and arrived in New York on 1 March, 1905. He seems to be traveling with a Salvatori Carlini, age 29, and a Francesco Carlini, all from the same origin - - probably older brothers? They are all from Ceccano, Italy, consistent with the origin of Enrica and Mary. The manifest writer had terrible handwriting, and I can’t make out their destination, except that they were all going to the same place.
