Misc. Notes
Johann Doub is not a relative, but Catharina Arney, the daughter of Jacob Arney, was bound to him when she became an orphan. See discussion with Jacob Arney. The connection is through Doub’s wife, Mary Eve Spainhour, who was a granddaughter of Jacob Arney’s father-in-law Lorentz Kron.

I have included several obervations about Doub here, just as a way to save and retrieve them in the future.

“RECORDS OF THE MORAVIANS IN NORTH CAROLINA”, Edited by Adelaide L. Fries:

Bethania 1779: “Oct 29. …Heinrich Schor’s wagon left… for Pennsylvania… with them went the leather-dresser, Daub, who had loaded the wagon with dressed and undressed deer-skins…”

Bethabara 1781: “April 14. …Kruger brought deer skins which he had gotten from the tanner Doub…”

Bethania 1781: “April 20. Br. Bagge was in Bethabara to get his deer-skins, …brought from Daub last week…” “April 28. We visited the home of Krieger, Sr. From there we went to see Daub, who has begun a new farm on Drieger’s land.”

Bethania 1781: “Oct. 7. Michael Hauser, Jr., told me that he had bound himself for two years and three months to the tanner and leather-dresser Daub; I wished for him that his experiences would be better than his brother Johannes had at George Frey’s.”

Minutes of Salem Boards, 1782: The Single Sisters should have businesses… making of gloves… The complaint that they cannot get leather… will try to have supplied… by Doub, who lives near Bethania.”

Bethania 1787: “Dec. 1. I rode with Spoenhauer, Sr., to the home of Mr. Daub, who had asked me to come and baptize his daughter, born on the 8th of August of this year.”

Salem Diary, 1788: “Dec. 1. Br. Beck went to the home of Johannes Daub, a neighbor of Bethania, and baptized his little son and two other children.”

Salem Diary, 1808: “June 6, Monday. Br. Reichel preached today in the German church beyond Muddy Creek to a numerous and attentive audience, in which was the Methodist preacher, Daub, who lives not far from Bethania.” (YES, “Preacher Daub” is indeed the tanner discussed previously!)

“Birth: Mar. 27, 1742, Germany Death: Oct. 18, 1813 North Carolina, USA John Doub (originally Johannes Doub) was born near Cologne, Germany. He came to America in 1763 aboard the vessel, "Richmond". He lived for a while in Pennsylvania before coming to North Carolina, near Bethania, where he worked as a tanner. He married Mary Eve Spainhour around 1780. They were the parents of 9 children: John, Henry, William, Jacob, Joseph C., Mary Elizabeth, Michael, Mary Eve, and Peter Doub. John and Mary were very religious and in 1789, John was greatly impressed with the preaching of a Methodist circuit riding preacher named Andrew Yeargin. He opened his home for meetings of a Methodist class and it grew into a congregation. In 1802, John was ordained a minister himself. Also that year, a large shed was built to accommodate the congregation. It is believed he was the first person buried in that little cemetery of "Doub's Chapel". *Special thanks to Find A Grave member, Carol, for her help and persistance in locating this cemetery.* Burial: Old Doubs Methodist Church Cemetery Pfafftown, Forsyth County, North Carolina, USA Edit Virtual Cemetery info [?] Created by: scrap Record added: Mar 02, 2007 Find A Grave Memorial# 18129532”
