ENGLAND 1844:Henry William Bolton was clearly born in England. And in the 1900 USA census he said he was born in November 1844. However “Bolton” and “Boulton” were very common names in England, as were various combinations of the names “Henry” and “William”, including large numbers born circa 1844. So without more information, the following is not yet verified:

However there is one possible fit: The England & Wales Birth Index says one Henry William Bolton was born in the district of Clerkenwell in the county of Middlesex. The birth was REGISTERED in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1845, which could be consistent with a birth in Nov 1844. (For a fee, one can order a copy of the birth certificate - but even then not sure this is the right man?)

1881 CANADA CENSUS, ST. LAWRENCE WARD, MONTREAL CITY, QUEBEC:
William Boulton is found, and despite the use of his middle name and the spelling of “Boulton”, the collection of family members make it clear this is the RIGHT family. William is age 37, born in England, belongs to the Church of England, and works as a “G.T.R. Checker” (whatever that is). His wife is Mary Boulton, born in Canada, but of Irish origin. She (and all the children) are Catholic. At home are Mary (age 5), Clara (3), and Alice (1). There are 4 young women (ages 28-30), who appear to be boarders.

1883 WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA?
His son, Arthur George Bolton, told the WWII draft board that he was born in Winnipeg on 2 Jun 1883. So the family must have been there.

Found marriage record for Maude Bolton, daughter of Henry W. Bolton and Mary Lockling, to Alfred Warren Proctor in Waltham, MA. Reported her birth in Winnipeg.

1900 CENSUS, WALTHAM, MIDDLESEX, MA: This census is the current primary source of information about this family, showing Henry and Mary with all 10 of their children. It reports they have been married 26 years (i.e., married about 1874), and they came to the USA in 1887.All the names, birth locations, and approximate birth dates are taken from this census. Henry works in an organ factory as a builder. His wife and oldest four kids all have various jobs in a watch factory. Wife Mary reports her father was born in Scotland, her mother in England, and she was born in Canada. Lillian was the first child born in the USA, in 1888. They live on Prospect Street, in Waltham.

MASSACHUSETTS DEATH RECORDS:
Died 8 Dec 1904 in Waltham. Parents Henry W and Sarah Ellis. He was an “organ builder”, and died of “organic heart disease”. They lived at 49 Prospect St., Waltham.

Henry W Bolton and his wife Mary Locking Bolton are buried in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham, Middlesex, MA. His death was 8 Dec 1904. He is reported as the son of Henry W Bolton & Sarah Ellis.
