Market St., Indianapolis, IN, Jan., 2005 Rufus Woodrow Coffey, Sr. 90, died Sunday, January 23, 2005. He was born the son of Edward Cullem and Gertie Taylor Coffey of Monticello, Kentucky. Rufus married Lula B. Denney on her birthday, June 18, 1938 and they were married for 53 years, until her death in 1991. His career was devoted to one company, Indiana Gear Works, where he worked faithfully for 42 years, retiring in 1979. A devout Christian, Rufus attended Christian Tabernacle Church, where he drove the Sunday School bus and served many years as an Usher. He was an avid gardener; a hunter, fisherman, gun trader and he loved his beagle hounds. He held memberships with the Hoosier Beagle Club (Kennard, IN) and the Central Indiana Beagle Club (Cloverdale, IN) where he raised and competed his beloved canine friends. Rufus is survived by two brothers, Ben and Cullem "Junior" Coffey. Six surviving children include: Dona Collie, Joyce Applegate, Wanda Beck, Rufus "Bud" Coffey, David Coffey and Anna Rust. Linda McGruder, the fifth of seven children died in 1975. He leaves 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was a wonderful friend to many, regardless of age. His good voice singing bass or tenor at church and family gatherings will be sadly missed by all of his friends and relatives. Always wearing a warm smile, it is his wisdom that will be missed by all that knew him. Friends may call Tuesday, January 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center - Lawrence, 5215 N. Shadeland Ave. Funeral services will be held at the Christian Tabernacle Church at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 26. Burial will be in Washington Park East Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Tabernacle Church. Rufus Woodrow Coffey and Lula B. Denney were married on 18 June 1938. They appeared in the census on 6 April 1940 in Wayne Co., KY.41663 Lula B. Denney, daughter of Samuel Grant Denney and Hattie Jane Guffey, was born on 18 June 1919 in Wayne Co., KY.
