Mr. Coffey was born June 29, 1917, in Watauga County, a son of the late William Leon Coffey and Marion Norris Coffey. He was a retired "Cattleman" and farm owner, and a member of Grace Lutheran Church. Mr. Coffey was a veteran of the US Army serving in WWII. He was awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry during the Battle of The Bulge and received two Purple Heart awards. Mr. Coffey is survived by one daughter, Martha Crosswell and husband, Joe, of Boone; one son, Wade Coffey Jr. and wife, Connie ,of Raphine, Virginia; three granddaughters, Julie Moose and husband, Channing, of Bellvue, Colorado, Carol Ann Whitley and husband, Chad, of Angier, North Carolina, and Amber Lynn Dudley and husband, Josh, of Mint Spring, Virginia; four grandsons, Jonathan Brooke Coffey and wife, Amanda, of Roseau, Minnesota, Isaac McLean Coffey and wife, Misty, of Ownesboro, Kentucky, Adam Blake Coffey of Roseau, Minnesota, and Michael Wade Crosswell and wife, Samantha, of Laurel Springs, North Carolina; four sisters, Irene Woods of Patterson, and Jewel Moody, Helen Carroll, and Marie Broyhill, all of Blowing Rock; one brother, Wayne Coffey of Blowing Rock; and two sisters-in-law, Ersal Coffey of Boone, and Betty Coffey of Blowing Rock. He is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Cohn Coffey; one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Coffey; one sister, Thelma Deal; and two brothers, Homer Coffey and Owen Coffey. Funeral services for Wade Coffey Sr. will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, February 12, 2012, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor John Bollinger. Military graveside rites and burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, provided by American Legion Post 130 of Boone. The family will receive friends 6 p.m.t o 8 p.m. Saturday, at Hampton Funeral Service.
