His body was found floating in a pond near his house, and Coroner Richard E. Kelley attributed the death to drowning. Coffey's son, Wade, said his father had been under medical care and the family believed he may have suffered a stroke or heart attack and fallen into the pool. Kelly said investigation was continuing. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Marion Norris Coffey; four sons, Wade and Homer of Boone, Owen of Blowing Rock, and Wayne of Ft. Bragg; five daughters, Mrs. Odell Deal of Hickory, Mrs. Vernon Woods of Lenoir, Mrs. Max Moody, Mrs. Jack Triplett and Mrs. Ralph Broyhill of Route 1, Blowing Rock; two sisters, Miss Edna Coffey of Lenoir and Mrs. Ada Moretz of Boone; 17 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Perkinsville Baptist Church. Burial will be Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
