Blowing Rock Woman Dies

Blowing Rock, Dec. 16 -- Mrs. Ella Coffey Collins, 82, of Route 1, Blowing Rock, died this morning at Blowing Rock Hospital.

She was owner and operator W. W. Collins Store on Highway 221 between Blowing Rock and Linville. She was a native of Caldwell County and had lived in Watauga County for 60 years.

Surviving are two sons, E. Spencer Collins of Asheboro and William S. Collins of Boone; two daughters, Miss Sallie Estes of the home and Mrs. Howard Foster of Morganton; a sister, Mrs. Viola Young of Blowing Rock; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Advent Christian Church at Boone's Fork. Burial will be in Boone's [sic] Fork Cemetery.

Lee Ella Coffey and Joseph Commodore Church were married on 10 October 1896 in Yadkin Valley, Caldwell Co., NC.^19919,19920 Joseph Commodore Church, son of James Franklin Church and Laura Virginia Blackburn, was born on 12 July 1877 in North Carolina. He registered for the WWI draft on 12 September 1918 in Watauga Co., NC.¹⁹⁸⁸⁷ Joseph died from the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm on 11 May 1956 at the age of 78 at Blowing Rock Hospital in Blowing Rock, Watauga Co., NC and was buried at Boone Fork Community Cemetery in Blowing Rock, Watauga Co., NC on 13 May 1956.^{19888,19889,19890,19891}

Lenoir, May 12--Funeral services for J. C. Church of Route 1, Blowing Rock, who died Friday evening at a Blowing Rock hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the residence, with the Rev. Marshall Setzer of Lenoir and the Rev. Bob Shores of Blowing Rock officiating.

Burial will be in Boone Fork Cemetery. Church was born in Watauga County on July 12, 1877. He was a retired farmer. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Leslie Coffey and Mrs. Herman Coffey both of Blowing Rock; a sister, Mrs. J. A. McLean of Connelly Springs; a brother, Ellis Church of Collettsville; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

A retired motel owner and operator and former merchant, Miss Collis was born at Shulls Mills on December 14, 1905, a daughter of the late W.W. and LeElla Coffey Collins. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Advent Christian Church. Miss Collins is survived by one sister, Norma Hodges and husband, Rev. Howard Hodges of Morganton, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Edna Hampton of Boone, two nephews, William S. Collins, Jr. of Conway, South Carolina and Roy Johnson of Kingsport, Tennessee; four nieces, Sharon Dowdy of Altamont Springs, Florida, Ernestine Nanny of Marion, S.C., Rebecca Parsons, of Lexington, N.C. and Susan Ballard of Charlotte, N.C.; several great nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, W.W. and LeElla Coffey Collins, two brothers, Staple Collins and Spencer Collins, two half brothers and two half sisters. Funeral services for Miss Collins were conducted Saturday, January 18 at The Blue Ridge Advent Christian Church. Officiating was the Rev. Ronnie Jones and the Rev. Gordon Nobles. Interment followed in the Boone Fork Cemetery. Memorials may be considered to the Blue Ridge Advent Christian Church, in care of Susan Coffey, 146, Wilson Coffey Road, Blowing Rock, NC 25605. Austin and Barnes Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. De Estie never married.
