He was born in Caldwell County Aug. 8, 1906, a son of the late John W. and Ella Henderson Coffey. He was a caretaker at "Rocky Meadows" in Blowing Rock. Coffey is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bessie Downs Coffey of Blowing Rock; one daughter, Mary Ann Coffey of Kannapolis; one brother, Charlie Coffey of Blowing Rock; and one sister Mrs. Sadia Bolick of Rt. 1, Blowing Rock. He is also survived by one grandson, Daren Coffey of Kannapolis, and a number of nieces and nephews. Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in the Boone Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of Arrangements. Coffey Mrs. Bessie Downs Coffey, 89, of Chestnut Street, Blowing Rock, died Wednesday, May 14, 1997, at her residence. She was a native of Caldwell County, born Aug. 19, 1907, a daughter of the late William Columbus and May Lou Brown Downs. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Coffey of Kannapolis; one grandson, Daren Coffey of Kannapolis; one brother, Clyde Downs and his wife, Velma, of Blowing Rock; one niece, Ruby Roach of Boone; and one nephew, Charles Downs, Jr. of Lansing, Mich. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Downs. Services will be conducted Monday evening at 8 o'clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Max West. Burial will follow Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Woodlawn Cemeterey in Blowing Rock. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:30 until 8 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.
