HAMPTON - Alvin D. Coffey, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 1996.

A native of North Wilkesboro, N.C., he had been a Hampton resident for 60 years and retired as a painting contractor.

Mr. Coffey is survived by five daughters, Barbara Lehosky of Tucson, Ariz., Marlene Pennington of Hampton, Kay Bateman of Hampton, Deborah Brown of Richmond and Theresa Coffey of Gloucester; a son, Tommy Coffey of Richmond; four stepdaughters, Lenora Krajenke, Mary Baker, Jane Hobbs and Nancy Keenan; two sisters, Florene Coffey of Hampton and Hazel Wyatt of High Point, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be private.

This is probably the Alvin Coffey of the Fairplains community in North Wilkesboro, NC who was "sentenced for larceny and receiving of tools valued at over $200." Alvin was given a sentence "of 18 months on the roads for larceny and 18 months for receiving stolen goods."

He continued to find trouble. In Feb. of 1940 he was caught stealing a car in California; in May of 1940 he was accused of breaking and entering and, in Feb. 1949 he was accused of and found guilty of forgery. The last two in Wilkesboro.

Alvin Dean Coffey and Ruth E. Johnson were married. Ruth E. Johnson, daughter of Roby Johnson and Sarah Myers, was born circa 1919 in Wilkes Co., NC. Ruth died in Hampton, VA on 2 June 1961 and was buried at Mountlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., NC on 5 June 1961 .

Leslie Marlene "Aunt Lenie" Pennington, 62, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001.
A native of North Carolina, she was a longtime Hampton resident where she retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company and owned Coffey's Harbor House.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin D. and Ruth Johnson Coffey, and two sisters, Wanda K. Bateman and Patricia Coffey. She is survived by seven sisters, Barbara Lehosky, Deborah Brown, Theresa Coffey, Mary Baker, Lenora Krajenke, Jane Hobbs and Nancy Loflin, and one brother Alvin D. Coffey, Jr. all of Hampton, eleven nieces and nephews, and her dearest friend of 45 years, Edie Hoover.

A memorial service will be conducted at noon today at the home of Theresa Coffey and Marlene Pennington, 2932 Chesapeake Avenue, Hampton. The family will receive friends afterwards until 3 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 895 Middle Ground Blvd., Suite 154, Newport News, VA 23606.

Marlene was deeply loved and will be missed by her brother, sisters, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. She poured much kindness and continuous generosity to her friends. To her patrons who lovingly referred to her as "Aunt Lenie," she would want you to know that she loved you, too.
