Obituary, The News-Topic, Lenoir, Caldwell Co., NC, Sep. 19, 2003 Wheeler Coffey Wheeler Eden Coffey, 93, of Gates Avenue, Morganton, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at his residence following a period of declining health. He was born March 1, 1910, in Avery County, the son of the late Cleveland and Mary Ramsey Coffey. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Polly E. Townsend; his second wife, Annie Lee Crump; a half-brother, and 15 grandchildren. Mr. Coffey was the oldest active member of Zion Road Baptist Church. He is survived by a son, James E. Coffey of Lenoir; daughters, Mary Rainey and Nancy Adams, both of Big Stone Gap, Va., Julie Orange of East Stone Gap, Va., Shirley Lawson of Dryden, Va. and Rosalee Carswell of Mt. Airy, MD; a stepson, Charlie C. Coffey of Beech Mountain; stepdaughters, Pauline Sprouse and Christine Clark, both of Morganton and Shirley G. Burse of Spruce Pine; 52 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren, and three great-great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Rev. Micah Piercy officiating. Burial will follow in the Calloway Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, 1345 Gates Ave., Morganton. Wheeler Eden Coffey and Annie Lee Crump were married. Annie Coffey Annie Lee Crump Coffey, 91, of 1345 Gates Ave., Morganton, died Thursday, March 10, 1994 at Grace Hospital. She was born Nov. 20, 1992, in Avery County to the late Laura Crump. Coffey was preceded in death by her former husband, McKinnley Coffey; two son, Roy and Paul Coffey; and four daughters, Willie Coffey, Dorothy Coffey, Wilma Coffey and Lorene Goodwin. Coffey was a housewife and a member of Zion Road Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Wheeler F. Coffey; one son, Charlie Coffey of Elk Park; three daughters, Christine Clark and Pauline Sprouse, both of Morganton, and Shirley Burse of Spruce Pine; four step-daughters, Shirley Lawson, Mary Rainey and Nancy Adams, all of Virginia, and Julie Orange of Charlottesville, Va.; one stepson, James F. Coffey of Lenoir; 21 grandchildren; 19 stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and 14 stepgreat-grandchildren. The funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion Road Baptist Church with the Revs. Edward Downs, Cade Burns, Jr. and Randy Gibson officiating. Burial will be at Calloway Cemetery in Newland [sic] [Cemetery is closer to Jonas Ridge]. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at Kirksey's Funeral Home in Morganton. |
