514. McCaleb Coffey was born in 1814 in North Carolina. He was elected Caldwell Co., NC Commissioner on 6 June 1868.365 He witnessed the election of David Nathaniel Coffey as was party to a suit to gain title to deceased brother's land on 16 March 1893 in Boone, Watauga Co., NC.2079 McCaleb died in 1895 at the age of 81 in Watauga Co., NC and was buried at Blowing Rock, Watauga Co., NC.2080,2081

McCaleb was a Confederate sympathizer. It was stated in "The Four Coffey Brothers" by John Preston Arthur that McCaleb Coffey lost four sons (Confederates) in the Civil War during the Siege of Richmond. Note: this statement is not entirely accurate. Although still tragic, McCaleb lost 3 sons, not 4 during the war and they did not die at the Siege of Richmond.

McCaleb Coffey and Sarah "Sally" Hayes were married. They appeared in the census on 3 October 1850 in Watauga Co., NC.2082 They2082 appeared in the census on 15 September 1860 in Watauga Co., NC.2083 McCaleb and Sally2083 appeared in the census on 2 August 1870 in Watauga Co., NC.2084 They2084 appeared in the census on 18 June 1880 in Watauga Co., NC.2085

McCaleb and Sarah raised Sarah and Mary Coffey, daughters of McCaleb's brother Jesse T. and Lettie Collins Coffey. Sarah "Sally" Hayes, daughter of John Hayes and Millie Medaris, was born in 1815 in North Carolina. Sarah died in Watauga Co., NC on 15 October 1898 and was buried at Sally was buried in October 1898 at White Springs Cemetery in Blowing Rock, Watauga Co., NC. Her death date is unknown.2086,2087

Thomas Ninevah Coffey was born in 1839 in North Carolina. Thomas died in Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania Co., VA on 3 May 1863 from wounds suffered during the battle with Co. E, 37th NC Regt. His burial site is unknown to me.2088,2089

Thomas Coffey (listed as Thomas N.) of Watauga Co. enlisted in Co.E, 37th NC Regiment at age 23 on 11-20-1861. Promoted to Full Corporal on 3-1-1862; Promoted to Full Private on 4-14-1862 (Reduced to ranks); Confined on 5-27-1862 at Fort Columbus, NY (And paroled); POW on 5-27-1862 at Hanover Court House, VA; Exchanged on 8-5-1862 at Aiken's Landing, VA; Absent, without leave on 9-1-1862 (6 mos); Returned on 01 May 1863 (Estimated day); Killed on 5-3-1863 at Chancellorsville, VA.

Jesse Finley Coffey was born in 1842 in North Carolina. Jesse enlisted in the on 25 July 1862 at Yadkin Valley, Caldwell Co., NC.2090 Jesse died in Big Creek Gap, Campbell Co., TN on 7 March 1863. Delap Cemetery in Campbell Co., TN.2091,2092,2093

John Elbert Coffey was born in 1844 in North Carolina. John died in Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania Co., VA on 3 May 1863 wounds received at the Battle of Chancellorsville2094

John E. Coffey enlisted at age 18 on 5-12-1862, was a POW 5-28-1862 at Hanover Courthouse in VA. He was exchanged & returned to fighting in August 1862. He was wounded 8-29-1862 at Manassas. He returned in Oct. 1862. He was killed on 5-3-1863 at Chancellorsville, VA.

The battle was fought from Apr. 30 to May 5, 1863. It is often called Lee's "perfect battle" because his actions in dividing his forces resulted in a significant Union defeat.
