Principal Found Dead In Car; Suicide Ruled

Moravian Falls (AP) - The body of Barney Coffey, principal of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Learning Academy, was found at his farm Sunday. Wilkes Coroner Eugene Wood ruled the death a suicide.

Wood said Coffey had apparently been dead for several days before being found in the cab of a pickup truck by members of his family. A missing persons report had been filed by his family with Charlotte police Saturday.

Wood said death was by carbon monoxide poisoning.

The learning academy at Huntersville in northern Mecklenburg County was established in 1867 under a federal grant. It is a residential school to diagnose and treat underachievers.

Coffey came to the academy two years ago after being on the staff of the North Carolina Achievement School in Winston-Salem for two years.

Barney Coffey and Helen Bentley were married. Helen Bentley was born (date unknown).
