January 1, 1936, age 78 years 2 months 16 days. He professed faith in Christ Feb 10, 1877 and jointed the Methodist church later joined the Missionary Baptist at Oak Hill Baptist Church where he remained a member until death. He was ordained to ministry, April 4, 1893. He was a great lover of the church and Sunday School and great friend to the young ministers. He always told them to stand for the cause of Christ. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, 6 children 5 boys sons, 1 daughter, 3 half brothers, 19 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends, but our is his eternal gain. Coffey Struck by Truck A Grainger Countyman was killed yesterday as he crossed Andrew Johnson Highway (11-E) just west of Kitts Market and ran in front of a truck, according to the sheriff's office. Snyder B. Coffey, a 61-year-old bachelor, of Rt. 2, Bean Station, died instantly. He was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 12:25 p.m. He suffered multiple fractures and other injuries. Ran Back Into Path Knox County Deputy Anthony Cahill said Mr. Coffey had gotten off a bus and was brossing from the north to the south side of the highway when he was struck by a westbound Mason-Dixon tractor-trailer rig driven by Jimmy H. L. Cox, 30, of Rt. 20, Surgoinsville. Witnesses told Deputy Cahill that Mrs. Coffey had run across the road in front of the truck and was continuing across the road when an eastbound car forced him back. He then ran back into the path of the truck, Deputy Cahill said. Apparently Panicked The deputy said the victim apparently panicked and that "if he had stayed in the center instead of running back, he would have been safe from both lanes of traffic." The tractor-trailer rig left 201 feet of skid marks, and the impact knocked Mr. Coffey 84 feet, Deputy Cahill said. Mr. Coffey was on his way to visit Thomas Walker, Rt. 1, Stawberry [sic] Plains, a barber whose shop is benind Kitt's Market, to discuss plans for a homecoming at Paw Paw Hollow Baptist Church. Mr. Coffey was a trustee of the church and an employe [sic] of Grainger County Board of Education. Mr. Coffey leaves a sister, Mrs. Mattie Carpenter, Bean Station; brother, Rufus Coffey, Thorn Hill, and several nieces and nephews. The body is at Brooks Mortuary, Morristown. Note: The driver was charged with manslaughter in connection with the death but was released when it was shown the Judge held there was no evidence of criminal negligence on the driver's part.
