There is conflicting information concerning Calvin Coffey. Some report him to have a second wife, Nancy Tuttle, but the Calvin that married Nancy was the son of Wellborn Coffey, and born about 24 years after this J. Calvin. Some researchers provide the following information: Calvin Coffey died prior to his last child being born in 1865. He was on his way back from the Civil War and fell over a broken limb, broke his leg and died from complications. Serena White Coffey raised the children by herself and after 30 years as a widow she married A. J. Watson in January of 1895. Just 3 months after their marriage A. J. Watson died. However, the 1870 census for Alexander, Ellendale Twp., North Carolina census lists Serena as a widow, but her youngest child Sophronia, is age 2 indicating that she was born in 1868. Unless this child was born out of wedock, Calvin survived the Civil War, but died two to three years later. Calvin Coffey and Serena "Rena" White were married before 1850 in North Carolina. They appeared in the census on 30 August 1850 in Yadkin Valley, Caldwell Co., NC.5814 They5814 appeared in the census on 21 September 1860 in Alexander Co., NC.5815 Serena "Rena" White, daughter of John White and Elizabeth , was born circa 1825 in North Carolina. She appeared in the census on 7 June 1870 in Ellendale Twp., Alexander Co., NC.5816 She appeared in the census on 11 June 1880 in Ellendale Twp., Alexander Co., NC.5817 Rena appeared in the census on 2 June 1900 in Alexander Co., NC.5818 She lived with her son William F. in Alexander Co., NC on 3 May 1910. She was enumerated in the household with her son William in 1910 as the widow Serena Watson. Serena died circa 1913. Calvin Coffey and Serena "Rena" White had the following children:
