The marriage record shows that George was 17 and Elizabeth was 20 when they wed in Feb., 1878. That would put George's birth year closer to early 1861. George died in an automobile accident on 12 May 1918 at the age of 55 in Raton, Colfax Co., NM and was buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Raton, Colfax Co., NM.15636,15637,15638 "Dedman Rancher Killed in Accident on La Bajada Hill "The Santa Fe New Mexican in a recent issue, reports the death of G. W. Coffey, a Dedman rancher, in an auto accident on La Bajada Hill, near Santa Fe. The Union County man, with his wife and grandson, were touring the state in a car. Coming to the famous hill, Mrs. Coffey and the grandson got out of the car to walk down. Mr. Coffee [sic] followed with the car. At the second turn the car became unmanagable and plunged over the embankment. Mr. Coffey was killed instantly. He is survived by his widow, a son and daughter at Dedman, and three sons living near Kenton, Oklahoma. The remains were shipped to Dedman for burial." Coffey was born in 1862, died 1918 in a car accident in New Mexico. He married Elizabeth Lewis in North Carolina. He and his family left North Carolina, moving to Texas where they lived for a short time. Around 1892 they moved on to Oklahoma, homesteading on a claim northwest of Hennessey where they lived in a sod house. Around 1905, the family moved to the Canton area and built a home on the land now owned by Mrs. Jim Coffey. Mary Elizabeth Lewis, daughter of Jackson Lewis and Lucinda Maltba, was born in November 1860 in North Carolina.15642 She appeared in the census on 3 January 1920 in Canton, Blaine Co., OK.15643 She appeared in the census on 10 April 1930 in Canton, Blaine Co., OK.15644 Mary died in Canton, Blaine Co., OK on 31 January 1935 and was buried at Canton Cemetery in Canton, Blaine Co., OK in February 1935 .15645 George Washington Coffey and Mary Elizabeth Lewis had the following children:
