John W. Coffey, former employee of the C & O Railway, died in Charlottesville Saturday night at the residence of his son, John J. Coffey. He was 78.

During his time with the railroad he supervised a number of major projects, and after his retirement became a farmer. He owned one of the largest apple orchards in Nelson County.

His wife, the former Miss Ella J. Bragg, died in 1934.

Beside John J. Coffey, he is survived by four other sons, Jasper and D. M. Coffey, both of Charlottesville; Rhodes H., Richmond; and Sam P., Front Royal; three daughters, Miss June Coffey, Richmond; Mrs. H. N. Coffey, Middletown; and Mrs E. A. Quillen, Waynesboro.

Also, two sisters, Mrs. Richard Dodd, Staunton; and Mrs. Clifton Truslow, Wintergreen; and one brother, Massie Coffey, Stuarts Draft.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Rodes Methodist Church, Avon, conducted by the Rev. Wilton E. Allen. Interment was in the churchyard.

Mrs. Ella J. Coffey

Waynesboro, Dec. 21--Mrs. Ella J. Coffey, 64, died at her home here today after an illness of three months. She formerly lived in Nelson County where funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Rhodes Methodist Church.

She is survived by five sons, Jasper and Donnie, Charlottesville; Rhodes, Richmond; Simon and Jack, Waynesboro; three daughters, Mrs. E. A. Quillen, Miss June Coffey and Mrs. H. N. Coffey, Waynesboro; one sister, Mrs. D. I. Mansfield, Charlottesville; three brothers, W. B., S. M. and T. H. Bragg, all of Fayetteville, W. Va.
