He lived with his parents in Nelson Co., VA on 21 August 1850. He lived with his parents in Nelson Co., VA on 11 September 1860. Joseph enlisted in the in Lamkin's Amherst-Nelson Light Artillery Regiment on 31 August 1861 at Nelson Co., VA.⁵¹⁰² A J. C. Coffey applied for a disability pension in Nash, Nelson Co., VA on 15 May 1909⁵¹⁰³

In this application he reported that he had served with Capt. J. H. Rives Battery of C. E. Lightfoots [sic] Battalion during the Civil War. He appeared in the census on 20 April 1910 in Nelson Co., VA.⁵¹⁰⁴ Joseph died in Nelson Co., VA on 16 March 1912 of appolexy⁵¹⁰⁵
