He enlisted on 8 March 1862 in Lamkin's Amherst-Nelson Light Artillery Regiment in Massies Mill, Nelson Co, VA.^5162,5163 He was discharged on 19 June 1862 in Charleston, Charleston Co., SC Alfred died on 8 August 1918 at the age of 74 in Rockcastle Co., KY and was buried at Timber Ridge ARP Church Cemetery in Lexington, VA.⁵¹⁶⁴

Alfred James Coffey and Martha Ann Bradley were married on 12 February 1863 in Augusta Co., VA.^5165,5166 They^{^5165,5166} appeared in the census on 2 September 1870 in Nelson Co., VA.⁵¹⁶⁷ They^⁵¹⁶⁷ appeared in the census on 30 June 1880 in Nelson Co., VA.⁵¹⁶⁸ Alfred and Martha^⁵¹⁶⁸ appeared in the census in June 1900 in Rockcastle Co., KY.⁵¹⁶⁹ They^⁵¹⁶⁹ appeared in the census on 27 April 1910 in Rockcastle Co., KY.⁵¹⁷⁰ Martha Ann Bradley, daughter of William Franklin Bradley and Elizabeth Wood, was born in June 1847 in Nelson Co., VA. She lived with her son Salathial Coffey in Rockcastle Co., KY on 5 January 1920. Martha died on 20 December 1927 at the age of 80 in Rockcastle Co., KY and was buried at Timber Ridge ARP Church Cemetery in Lexington, VA.⁵¹⁷¹
