Rebecca E. Campbell and Andrew Jackson Coffey were married on 5 February 1861 in Nelson Co., VA.5086 They5086 appeared in the census on 6 September 1870 in Nelson Co., VA.5087 They5087 appeared in the census on 30 June 1880 in Nelson Co., VA.5088 Rebecca and Andrew5088 appeared in the census on 26 June 1900 in Louisa Co., VA.5089 They5089 appeared in the census on 29 April 1910 in Campbell Co., VA.5090 Andrew Jackson Coffey, son of Henry Benjamin Coffey and Mary Sarah Campbell, was born in October 1836 in Nelson Co., VA. Andrew was conscripted by the CSA circa 1862.5081

"Andrew J. Coffey was conscripted into the Confederate Army but deserted when Robert E. Lee entered Maryland before the battle of Antietam in September 1862. He went to Philadelphia and enlisted with the [U]nion and fought the Confederacy for three years before being sent to N. Dakota in 1865 to fight Sioux and Cheyenne [I]ndians. He was discharged in Iowa in 1865 and sent home to live amongst his kin all of whom fought for the south!"

[The above account may be accurate but unlikely it is about this Andrew Jackson Coffey. An A. J. Coffey served in the 56th VA Infantry, Co. D, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA, Records show that he enlisted in Co. D, of that regiment but a date is not given. The record also shows that he went in as a Private and came out with the same rank. It reports nothing to confirm the above statement. An Andrew J. Coffey was a Union volunteer in the 4th US Vol. Infantry. According to the history of that unit, a few thousand Confederate soldiers enlisted and served in a number of regiments of "U.S. Volunteers." The unit history also tells us that the loyalty of these volunteers was often doubted and many were assigned to locations away from the Civil War battlefields or, send to the west to fight Indians.]

Andrew died on 2 April 1911 at the age of 74 in Lynchburg, Independent City, VA and was buried at Henry B. Coffey Family Cemetery in Nelson Co., VA.5091,5092
