Before 1987

Edgar Coble, youngest son of Cornelius Pacely Coble and Mary G. Bullard, was born in Wichita County, Texas, August 10, 1886.

He and his parents moved to Amarillo in 1901. C. P. and Edgar planted many of the cottonwood trees that grow on Amarillo Creek northwest of Amarillo. Edgar attended school at Phillips Academy which stood on a hill north of town.

Edgar worked in the cattle business in his early years in Amarillo, though he still had interests in Wichita County. On one trip to that county, he managed to get into the famous Wolf Hunt staged for President Theodore Roosevelt. Quanah Parker and Lee Bivins also were in attendance.

He continued in cattle business on the Wright ranch in Roberts County. In Miami, he met Ruth Coffee, daughter of Woods and Ollie Pickens Stribling Coffee. She was born November 17, 1891, Tecumseh Creek, Throckmorton County, Texas. Ruth was an accomplished pianist and teacher. The couple was married April 7, 1915. The wedding was scheduled for nine o'clock in the morning. Edgar had been very active in the practice of throwing grooms into the horsetank at the town square. For this reason, he talked Ruth into a 4:00 o'clock wedding. After the early hour ceremony, the couple made a getaway and spend their honeymoon in Mineral Wells and in Throckmorton.

Mary Oliver was born to them January 18, 1916. Edgar Oran was born August 7, 1917. Soon after, they moved to Wichita Falls where Ruth Eileen was born April 11, 1919.

Moving to Amarillo in 1920, they bought property and built a home on Tennessee Street in San Jacinto. At that time, there were no houses between Tennessee and Belleview Street where Edgar's sister, Mrs. J. R. Roberts and her husband lived with the parents, C. P. and Mary B. Coble.

Edgar took up the carpenter trade and was foreman for Albert Randall Construction Company. He built many fine homes in Amarillo.

Fine finished cabinet appointments in the Masonic Temple on Fifth and Fillmore were built by Edgar. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, life member of Palo Duro Lodge and Amarillo Lodge, a Shriner and Knights Templar.

Ruth was a busy mother, sewing for her family, cooking and canning from Edgar's garden. She cared for the family through whooping cough, measles, chicken pox, scarlet fever and even pink eye! She is a charter member of Llano Estacado Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of Bonita Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, and of First Christian Church.

The Cobles invested in farm land in Moore County in 1926. The family continues to oversee the land accumulated.

Merle Jo was born October 1, 1922, the year San Jacinto School was built. Oran and Eileen joined her there. All four children attended San Jacinto Grade, Sam Houston Junior High and graduated Amarillo High School.

The home on Tennessee Street was a gathering place for relatives and friends. Ruth's brothers and sister came with their families. The cousins had great fun playing together.

Edgar's nieces and their children came during the summers.

Neighborhood children played baseball and tennis on vacant lots on either side of the house.

Doors were open except for hooks on the screens to keep them from banging in the wind.

Sunday nights after Church, young people gathered to play pink pon or other games.

Mary Oliver married Donely Gray Darnell, a rancher and farmer of Vigo Park, Texas. They continue to live there.

Edgar Oran, A Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) minister, marred Allison McKinless of Duncan, Oklahoma. They live in Texarkana, Texas, where Oran served Central Christian Church twenty-eight years.

Ruth Eileen married Rodney Derrill Glasscock, minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). They make their home in Amarillo.

Merle Jo married William Roy Moris of Ames, Oklahoma. She is employed at Mason and Hangar Contractors with the Department of Energy. Roy is with United States Postal Service.

Edgar died August 21, 1954, and is buried in Llano Cemetery. Ruth lives in Amarillo and is involved in activities of her children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren
