He was born April 11, 1918, in Nelson County, a son of the late John M. and Ninnie Coffey. He was an active and lifelong member of Sand Spring Baptist Church (formerly Sherando Christian Church) where he was an honorary deacon. He was retired from the former Blue Ridge Veneer Plant. He was preceded in death by one brother, Malcolm R. Coffey. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mary P. Coffey, whom he married Nov. 3, 1938; one son and daughter-in-law, Roger L. Coffey Sr. and Debbie Coffey of Sherando; six grandchildren, Renee Coffey, Johnnie Coffey, Cathy Coffey, Tresea [sic] Roberson, Roger L. Coffey Jr., and Donna Coffey; two great-grandchildren, Clara Coffey and Ashley Robertson; three aunts; one uncle; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Sand Spring Baptist Church by Pastor Brian Read, and the Revs. Stanley Shirk and Charles Ramsey with burial in Mountain Top Christian Church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be ray Coffey, Maphis Henderson, Earl Henderson, Elmer Fix, Steve Hargrove, Jim Thurston, Brainard Coffey and Joe Harman. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren and Billy Shifflett, Mike Stone, Katela Stone, Peggy Stone, Tory Patterson and friends attending the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Waynesboro Chapel of Etter Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Debbie Coffey. Mary Patterson, daughter of Charles L. Patterson and Ruby Dameron, was born on 26 December 1920 in Augusta Co., VA.
