Obituary, Ventura County Star, Ventura, CA, Dec. 14, 2011

Donald H. Coffey passed away on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011.

Don was born to Keith and Ora Coffey at St. John's Hospital in Oxnard on June 28, 1928. He lived most of his life in Ventura. He graduated from Ventura High School, class of 1946. He then attended Ventura Junior College. He lettered in both basketball and baseball.

He was too young for WWII, but enlisted in the Marines in 1947. After his Honorable Discharge he came back to Ventura and worked in the oilfields. After a few years he started his career as an electrician. He retired after 30 years with Taft Electric.

He married Betty Reed at Community Church on June 12, 1949, which resulted in a marriage of 62 years.

Don is survived by his wife, Betty; their two children, Linda Coffey and Richard Coffey; by two grandsons, Dustin Coffey and Tyler Coffey; and by two sisters, Edith Coffey and Pat Caldwell.

Don and Betty retired in 1988 and traveled in their motorhome. They were fortunate to visit 49 US states and five Canadian provinces. On one of their trips they visited a retired co-worker in the Hill Country of Texas, near Austin. They decided to purchase a second house out there near a lake. They continued to go between the two houses for the next 15 years. They decided to come back to Ventura full time in March of 2011.

Back home in Ventura he enjoyed his coffee buddies every morning at McDonalds, Wednesday lunch with Ventura Alumni, and Friday night couples dinner and pinochle game. He enjoyed coming back to his home in Ventura after all the fish were gone in Texas. It is said it is not the birth date nor the date of death that is important, but it is the dash in between. All in all, he had a wonderful dash!

All of his friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life Reception 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at Marie Calendars, 1295 S. Victoria Avenue in Ventura. Donations may be made in memory of Donald Coffey to the . [sic]
