Born in Yakima, Washington, Del moved with his parents Marvin and Helen Coffey to Portland at a young age. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1951. Shortly thereafter he joined the Portland Fire department. Thirty-two years later Del retired as a lieutenant on Fireboat One on the Willamette River. Quick to greet you with a warm smile and a baritone, "how ya, doin," Del could make anything out of anything. He was always trying to figure out how to fit a square steel beam into a round wooden hole - and more often than not he succeeded! His projects included building homes, raising barns and plumbing/electrical installation. During his life Del was the epitome of the "up for anything" personality. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, golf and home improvement projects. Del was preceded in death by his sister, Caryl MacMillan. He is survived by his wife, Marlene; daughters, Barbara, Evelyn and Brenda; step-daughter, Wendy; step-sons, Gregg, Mike, Dan and Steven; 12 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. He will be forever missed. There will be a Celebration of Del's Life for family and friends from 1 - 4 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2015. Please contact family members for details. |
