Fifth Generation

182. Joel Coffey was born in 1774 in North Carolina.421 He appeared in the census in 1810 in Columbia, Adair Co., KY.422 Joel died in Kentucky in 1822.

Joel may also have been the father of three other children; a daughter named Martha, a son named Fielden, and a son named Martin.

He could also be the Joel, Jr. found in Adair Co. in 1820 with younger wife and three young children. 1 male < 10, 1 male 26-44, 2 females < 10 and 1 female 16-25.

Joel Coffey and Jane Coffey were married in August 1793 in Wilkes Co., NC.418,419,420 Jane Coffey, daughter of Benjamin Coffey and Mary Hayes, was born circa 1774 in Rowan Co., NC.

Sheri Kelly writes that Jane was born about 1782. She could be the Jane in Enoch Jordan's household in 1860.
She appeared in the census on 24 August 1850 in Russell Co., KY.417

This is probably the same Jane Coffey, age 76, found in the 1850 Russell Co., KY census record. She was enumerated on sheet 224, dwelling/family 184. In the census she was referred to as "Jane Coffey Sr." The only other person in the household at this census was referred to as "Jane Coffey, Jr.", age 35. I believe those to be the widow and daughter of Joel, son of Nebuzaradon. There are some genealogy reports that indicate her name is Martha Sealey Step.

It is possible that this Jane and Joel belong to the Chesley Coffey family, although Benjamin may also have had a daughter named Jane.
