From Heritage of Watauga County 1849-1984, p.147 "source: family bible and personal knowledge of Texie H. Cook": "When Tom (Thomas) and Ellen was married, he entered a three hundred acre track of land, which was in the wilderness. This land was located in Watauga County. At that time there was a lot of wild life on this property. There were bears, cougars, wildcats, and deer. Tom was very industrious, he cleared over half of his property and built a little log cabin for his family to live in. In recent years this cabin was torn down and re-erected on the Horn in the West of Boone Property. I never knew much about my grandfather Tom Coffey, I was a young girl when he died, but one thing I remember is that he and Grandma Ellen came to see my mother and father and they were riding in a buggy drawn with horses. This was in 1913. I knew my grandmother Ellen real well. My parents moved into her home and cared for her for thirteen years. Ellen was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She knew the Bible well and she was always ready to help ones who were in need of instruction. My fondest memories of her was her sitting on the side of her bed reading the Scriptures. In her early life, she was very courageous. On one occasion, the neighbors dogs chased a wildcat down the hill and hemmed it in the corner of the fence where she was doing her family washing. She took her battling stick and killed the wildcat. Grandmother Ellen was greatly missed when she passed away, but our loss was her eternal gain." Martha Ellen Cook, daughter of Thomas D.
