George Hamilton Hayes, son of Joseph Harrison Hayes and Eliza Hodges, was born on 5 January 1868 in Watauga Co., NC. George died of a cerebro-vascular hemorrhage on 12 August 1953 at the age of 85 at Blowing Rock Hospital in Blowing Rock, Watauga Co., NC and was buried at Gragg Cemetery in Boone, Watauga Co., NC.33356,33357
George was the first man to obtain a diploma and license to practice veterinarian medicine in Watauga County. He practiced for 45 years. He was also chief deputy sheriff in that county from 1922 to 1924.

"Bill" Hayes, age 91, of Glen Alpine, and a former resident of Boone, died Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 27, 2009 at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care. Born February 17, 1918 in Watauga County, he was a son of the late George Hamilton and Rosa Ethel Coffey Hayes. Mr. Hayes was a retired mechanic, having worked for Johnson-Cook Ford for 22 years. He was a member of Rutherwood Baptist Church and was an avid gardener. Surviving are; two daughters; Lorraine Smith and husband Earl of Lake Waccamaw, and Delois Hayes and husband Donald of State Road, one granddaughter; Susan Lane and husband Michael of Boiling Springs; two grandsons; Scott Smith and fiance Ramona of Lake Waccamaw and Dustin Hayes of Winston-Salem; one step-daughter; Rose Mary Presnell of Columbia, SC, two step-grandchildren; Lisa Perrine and James Presnell and wife Linda of Lexington, SC; one sister; Julia Hicks of Anderson, SC; one brother Howell Hayes and wife Jean of Boone, and three step great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife; Violet Carroll Hayes, his second wife Mary Ellen Ward Hayes; two sisters; Texie Cook and Doris VanDyke, two brothers; Buck and Joe Hayes; one half sister; Nannie Cook and four half brothers; Roby, Orris, Tom and Don Hayes. Funeral services for Mr. Bill Hayes will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Harold Hayes and Rev. Burl Greer. Burial will follow in the Rutherwood Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday morning prior to the service from 10 o'clock until 11.
