O. H. Coffey, 98, Died Saturday

Oliver Hill Coffey, Hamburg's oldest citizen, who had resided in Fremont county sixty-nine years, passed away at his home in south Hamburg early Saturday morning Nov. 25, [1950] at the age of 98 years, 11 months and 15 days. While bedfast only three weeks, he had been in failing health for the past four months and had borne intense suffering prayerfully and patiently. He was a devoted husband and father, and a neighbor who could always be counted on in times of need.

His life work was farming and gardening and he was an expert at that until about five years ago, when failing health made it necessary to give up work. He was a member of the Methodist church and read his bible continuously until his sight failed; then he received spiritual inspiration from prayer and the sacred radio programs.

Mr. Coffey was born at Jamestown, Garrison county, Kentucky Dec. 11, 1851. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Tiller on Feb. 1, 1874. They raised a family of eight, four sons and four daughters. The Coffeys came to Fremont county in 1881 and he resided here since that time, forty-six years in his present home. Mrs. Coffey passed away Jan. 15, 1942, after nearly sixty-nine years of wedded life. The oldest child, Edward, died June 7, 1927 and Thomas the youngest, in military service, Oct. 16, 1916.

Mr. Coffey is survived by his sons, Judson of Bender, Sask., Canada, Boyce of Hamburg, and his daughters, Mrs. Mollie Catlett of San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Hattie Clayton, Mrs. Emma Houts and Mrs. Nell Notson of Hamburg, eighteen grandchildren, thirty seven great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss this good man, who was a pioneer of our community.

Services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday, Nov. 28, conducted by the Rev. Cecil C. Latta. Burial was in the Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Obituary, unknown newspaper

Tommy Coffey Died

Thomas Tiller Coffey died at the hospital at Jefferson barracks early Wednesday morning. He had been there scarcely two weeks, having left here October 3d with Ross Osborn who died just Friday. Both boys were sick when they arrived at the Barracks, according to the military escort who came with Ross on Saturday. Penumonia ensued immediately and both these young lives were snuffed out.

Tommy was previously called into the service at Camp Dodge but was found physically unfit to stand the strenuous training and was discharged. His call to Jefferson barracks was for limited service only. He never got to render that service but he was there and ready to do his country's bidding.

The remains arrived here yesterday morning and funeral services are not arranged but will be delayed to hear from Judson who may come from Canada.

He leaves a father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Coffey, three brothers, He, Boyce and Judson and four sisters, Mrs. Nellie Notson, Mrs. Mollie Catlett, Mrs. Emma Houts and Mrs. Hattie Clayton. All of them reside here except Judson who lives in Canada.

Tommy was born October 2, 1892 and died October 16, 1918, having reached the age of 26 years and 14 days.
