Thomas Ray Sr., age 76 of Shawnee, died Friday, Dec. 13 in Shawnee. Mr. Coffey was born January 27, 1909 in Omaha, TX, the son of Thomas Jefferson Coffey and Lillian Ray Coffey. His father passed away in 1918. He was raised by his mother, along with his sister, Evelyn Lucille. They moved to Caddo, OK in 1920 were he graduated from high school. After attending a preparatory school in Greenville, TX for 2 years he moved to Shawnee in 1927 to attend Oklahoma Baptist University.

While in school Tom played in a dance band, The Hotel Washington Ramblers, playing the clarinet and the saxophone. He worked at Central Drug No. 2 for George Carey and Graham Barbour and purchased the 838 N. Kickapoo location in 1939. After graduation from OBU with a degree in mathematics he attended Danforth Pharmacy School in Ft. Worth, TX. While in Ft. Worth he managed two drug stores of the Renfro chain.

He married Edna Mae Poindexter Feb. 12, 1935. They celebrated their 50th anniversary earlier this year.

Tom was a member and past president of the Shawnee Lions Club, a member and past president of the Retail Merchants Association, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Shawnee Country Club, State & National Pharmaceutical Associations and was a 32nd Degree Mason & Shriner.

The family requests that contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the donors favorite charity. The casket will be open until 12:00noon, Tuesday at Roesch Funeral Chapel and will not be open at the church.

Survivors includes his wife, Edna Coffey of the home; 3 sons and 2 daughter-in-laws, Tom R. Coffey Jr. of Shawnee, Dr. J. Walter and Diane Arrington Coffey of Stillwater, Dr. Robert B. and Roseann Upton Coffey of Okc, 9 grandchildren, numerous relatives and friends.

Services Tuesday, Dec. 17, 1985 at 1:00pm at The First Presbyterian Church of Shawnee under the direction the Roesch Funeral Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Winfield Oppegard with burial in Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee.

Thomas Ray Coffey and Edna Mae Poindexter were married on 12 February 1935. They appeared in the census on 6 April 1940 in Shawnee, Pottawatomie Co., OK.40530 Edna Mae Poindexter was born on 26 July 1914 in Texas. Edna died in Oklahoma on 6 November 1986 and was buried at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee, Pottawatomie Co., OK in November 1986 .40531 Edna's family owned Poindexter Furniture Store on University Dr. in FortWorth, Tx. Thomas and Edna had a home on Dartmore Court in Fort Worth,Tx.

Thomas Ray Coffey , Jr. was born on 22 September 1936 in Shawnee, Pottawatomie Co., OK. Thomas died on 23 June 2010 at the age of 73 at home in Tryon, Lincoln Co., OK and was buried at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee, Pottawatomie Co., OK on 28 June 2010.

Thomas Ray Coffey Jr. died at his home in Tryon, Okla., on Wednesday, June 23, 2010.

He was born on Sept. 22, 1936, in Shawnee to Thomas Ray Coffey and Edna Mae ‘Doke’ Poindexter Coffey. He attended school at the Oklahoma Military Academy, Claremore and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1954. He attended Oklahoma A&M College. Tom served in the US Army in the medical corps, serving in Germany 1958-59. He had a love for the outdoors, politics, people and music.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his children, Tray Coffey and wife Teresa, Stillwater; Carrie Verrill and husband Gary of Norman; grandchildren, Lauren and Lily Coffey, Samantha and Kelsey Verrill; brothers, Dr. J. Walter Coffey and wife Diane, Stillwater; Dr. Robert P. Coffey and wife, Roseann, Oklahoma City; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside services will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park on Monday, June 28, 2010 at 2pm with Dr. Gale Izard, Texas, officiating. Reception will follow at the Resthaven Funeral Home Reception Center. He was about 61 years old in 1997 when I visited with his brother JohnWalter Coffey over the phone. Said he lived in Az. and had a son anddaughter in Norman, Ok named Trey and Carrie. Seems Thomas, Jr. isestranged from his brothers.
