She said he told her he was going to lie down under the grapevine. She heard moans and called for help when she found him. He died in their front yard while being carried to a car to be taken to Watauga Hospital. Sheriff Edmisten said a small empty strychnine bottle was lying near him, and he was sure Coffey's death was suicide. Coroner Kelly will hold and inquest upon his return to Boone today. Coffey owned a woodworking shop on the outskirts of Boone. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Norman, James, and Lannis; three daughters, Mrs. Louise Jones, Ethel and Emma Lee Coffey, all of Route 2, Blowing Rock. Funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Burial will be in Critcher Cemetery. Coffey was 43 years old and lived on Route 2, Blowing Rock.
